Zeiss
Zeiss is a German manufacturer of lenses and other optical systems, located in Oberkochen with an important subsidiary in Jena. Carl Zeiss is a subsidiary of the Carl Zeiss Foundation of which also Schott Glass located in Jena, is part.
 
Voigtländer
An optical company founded in 1756 by Johann Friedrich Voigtländer in Vienna and thus the oldest name in cameras. It produced the Petzval photographic lens in 1840, and the world's first all-metal daguerrotype camera (Ganzmetallkamera) in 1841, also bringing out plate cameras shortly afterwards.
 
Sinar
The Swiss photographer Carl Hans Koch invented the Sinar camera in 1947. His main aim was to produce a Large format camera of high precision and simple operation, with a system of parts that were readily interchangeable.
 
Rollei
Rollei is a German manufacturer of optical goods, and maker of the Rolleiflex series of cameras. Founded 1920 by Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, they have had a chequered manufacturing history but still retain a certain cachet amongst photographers.
 
Polaroid Corporation
The Polaroid Corporation was founded in 1937 by Edwin H. Land. It is most famous for its instant film cameras, which reached the market in 1948, and continue to be the company's flagship product line.
 
Pentax
Pentax Corp. was founded in 1919 as Asahi Optical Corp. It is one of the large worldwide acting optical companies, producing still Cameras, binoculars, and other optical instruments.
 
Olympus Company
Olympus is a Japanese company specializing in optics and imaging. Olympus was founded in 1919, and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It is named after "Olympus", the home of the gods in Greek mythology;
 
Nikon Corporation
Nikon Corporation (Nikon, Nikon Corp.) is a Japanese company specializing in optics and imaging. Its products include cameras, binoculars, microscopes, and measurement instruments. It was founded in 1917 as Nihon (Nippon) Kōgaku Kōgyō; the company was renamed Nikon Corporation, after its cameras, in 1988. As of 2002, it has about 14,000 employees. Nikon is one of the Mitsubishi companies.
 
Minox
The Minox, the archetypal sub-miniature camera, was invented by the engineer Walter Zapp of Riga, Latvia, in 1936. Production in Riga at VEF ran from 1937/1938 until 1944. After WWII, production was re-started in Germany from 1948.
