The airport services the metropolitan area of the city of Mumbai and the terminals are physically located in the suburbs of Santacruz and Sahar. The airport was formerly known as Sahar International Airport but was recently renamed after the 16th century king of Maharashtra state, Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Statistics
The airport is the busiest in India and serves as the primary international gateway to the country with service from 39 international carriers in addition to flag carrier Air India. It also serves as a hub for domestic carriers Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Air Sahara. The airport averages 369 daily scheduled commercial movements with annual averages of 11 million passengers and 326,000 tons of cargo.
Structure
The airport consists of the International Terminal (Terminal II aka Sahar) and the Domestic Terminals (Terminal I aka SantaCruz). These terminals use the same airside facilities but are physically separated on the landside, requiring a 10-15 minute drive between them. The Airport Authorities of India provide shuttle services between the domestic and international terminals for connecting passengers. Terminal I is further divided into Terminal I-A serving Indian Airlines and its subsidiary Alliance Air, and Terminal I-B serving Jet Airways, Air Sahara and other private domestic carriers. Terminal II is further divided into Terminal II-A serving most international carriers and Terminal II-C serving Air India and partner airlines.
The airport has 2 primary runways designated 09-27 and 14-32. Runway 14-32 (2925 mts) runs between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, while Runway 09-27 (3489 mts) intersects it south of the terminal buildings.
Travel times
Journey times from the airport to the centre of Mumbai can vary significantly depending on traffic, typically taking between 40-120 minutes.
